How American Iron Offroad Ball Joint Delete™ Systems outperform other Ram 2500/3500 joints.
Let Us Explain! An in-depth look at what makes the Dodge front end so problematic.
To be fair........it's not the ball joints, it's the geometry in the front end and how that affects the function of the ball joints. Dodge switched to AAM inner C's & outer knuckles in the year 2000, retaining the Dana center section until 2003 and switching that over to AAM in 2003. Every other axle in history puts the joints on one rotational plane so they rotate along the same axis......not AAM. The AAM axle puts the upper and lower on a different rotational axis. Here's 2 simple pictures to get an idea visually.

So what's the big deal?
When this is done, it allows the lower joint to misalign so the bearing tilts as it's rotated which by itself isn't a huge deal....but then the upper joint comes into the picture. The upper joint is simply a greased pin inside a sleeve that had no ability to misalign at all. So how does that work when you pair that with a lower joint that misaligns??? Well, it doesn't or at least doesn't work well you could say. This geometry is why the Dodge front ends see SOOO many joint changes and they still do it to this day. A joint will last longer if it's only movement is in a single plane, not multiplanar.
How does that upper function with a misaligning lower joint?
Since the upper has no misalignment it has no choice but to be under a "side load" when the truck is steered left & right while the greased pin plunges up & down. The resulting action on the knuckle when steered is the front of the knuckle dips downward and the rear of the knuckle raises upward. Not an ideal situation when you factor in the weight of the Cummins engine hanging above that axle.
So what does an American Iron Ball Joint Delete™ System do to fix it?
There's no way to "fix" the geometry.....it is what it is. BUT, things can be done to improve upon how they interact together (or lack thereof). Stock joints have a plastic liner and other aftermarket joints can't control the ball stud inside from moving up & down with steering meaning it's going to wear out faster. We can improve the stability of the joint by providing clamping force to the lower to lengthen its lifespan because it's consistently rotating & misaligning on the same surface. American Iron specs out specific bearing fitments for lower joints and upper joints to maximize their lifespan without adverse effects on steering. The upper joint in a Delete System gets a spherical bearing and not a greased pin without misalignment to reduce the plunging effect it sees with a lower that misaligns.
